Deciding how to clean your custom blinds in the Northern Rivers to keep them in top condition can be a challenge.
Depending on the type of custom blind you’ve had fitted, there are several different cleaning methods that can work effectively, at the same time as being safe and environmentally friendly.
Here we take a look at the best ways to clean Venetian blinds made from synthetic material, aluminium, and fabric blinds (also known as shades) that are exposed to excessive salt and sun in many areas of the Northern Rivers.
Vinyl Or Aluminium Blinds
There are several different ways of cleaning vinyl or aluminium blinds.
For larger blinds in particular we suggest moving the slats into the closed position, then wiping them over with a wrung-out damp cloth. Move the blinds through 180 degrees, then clean the other side of the slats in a similar manner.
Although some people suggest using a disinfectant, tumble dryer wipes or harsher cleaning agents on blinds, we don’t recommend it even for quality custom blinds. Simple, regular cleaning is gentle on your blinds, helping to keep them in good condition for longer.
Hot water and mild detergent are also eco-friendly options that are kind to the planet as well as your blinds.
Timber Blinds
The main difference between timber blinds and those made from synthetic materials or metal is that they may be more permeable to water. For this reason, we don’t recommend soaking them to remove dust and grime.
In general, we recommend treating them in the same way as you would a piece of wooden furniture. In most cases, simply wiping them over regularly with a microfibre cloth will be enough to keep them dust-free and clean.
For more stubborn grime, a tightly wrung-out cloth, wiped over the slats, is normally enough to remove it.
If you prefer, use proprietary wood cleaning wipes, that contain a solution that’s safe to use on timber will also protect and shine the timber to keep it looking newer for longer.
Fabric Blinds (Shades)
Roman blinds can usually be vacuumed clean! Use the soft brush attachment on the vacuum and keep the power low.
If the blind has a stain on it, spot cleaning the area with a damp cloth and mild detergent will usually work. For tough stains, we recommend using a specialist fabric stain remover that’s been formulated to deal with the problem.
Roller blinds can be wiped over with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
We recommend cleaning blinds at least once a month. Regular cleaning ensures dirt doesn’t have a chance to build up. It also means the job won’t take long.
Most blinds require no more than half an hour or so of cleaning each month to stay in top condition. Maintaining your blinds clean also helps to protect the colour of your blinds and increase it’s life span. Doing these instructions on this guide, make your blinds life longer and be a great investment for your home.
